Part Rock Hill, Part Lakefront
Tree Removal in India Hook comes with a question most other neighborhoods do not have: are you inside Rock Hill or not? Most of India Hook has been annexed into the city, but the area is still counted by the Census Bureau as its own census-designated place, and a few parcels may still sit in unincorporated York County. Which side your lot is on decides whose rules apply to a large tree, so we check that first.
A small place that doubled
India Hook had 1,614 residents in 2000, 2,051 in 2010 and 3,817 in 2020. Its 3.54 square miles include about 0.9 square miles of water, which tells you how much of it is shoreline. It is one of the three communities on Lake Wylie, along with Lake Wylie itself and Tega Cay, and it is where the Catawba Power Company built the original Catawba Dam in 1904 that first backed up the river.
What shoreline lots ask of a tree crew
Waterfront yards here tend to slope toward the lake, sometimes steeply. Large trees on those slopes have often been undercut over the years by waves and runoff. When we remove one, the plan is about control:
- We look at the root plate and bank before anyone climbs, because an undermined tree can shift when weight comes off one side.
- We take the crown down in small pieces and lower them on lines, keeping wood off docks, boathouses and retaining walls.
- We cut the trunk in rounds that can be carried or winched uphill.
- Where roots are holding the bank together, we often recommend leaving the stump in place rather than grinding it, so the soil does not wash out.
Rules that may apply
If your lot is inside the city, Rock Hill's zoning ordinance protects Heritage Trees: canopy trees over 32 inches in diameter at breast height and understory trees over 10 inches that are good specimens of their species. A big old oak on a lake lot can easily be that size. Ask the city's Planning and Development office before removing one. Separately, Duke Energy manages everything below Lake Wylie's full pond elevation of 569.4 feet, so trees on the bank below that line follow Duke's Shoreline Management Guidelines.
Storms off the water
Open water gives wind a long run before it hits the first row of trees. The trees on the lake edge of a lot take the worst of it. During Hurricane Helene in September 2024, York County reported hundreds of downed trees. If a storm has left you with a split trunk or a hanger over the house, call (803) 752-2370 and describe what you see; keep people out from under it until it has been looked at.
Households here
India Hook had 1,552 households and 1,635 housing units in 2020, with about 5% vacant. Most homeowners we meet here want to keep as much shade and screening as they can and only take the tree that has become a risk. We price that kind of selective removal tree by tree. Get a free estimate
India Hook Facts
- Mostly annexed into Rock Hill. The majority of India Hook has been annexed into the City of Rock Hill, though it is still counted as a separate census-designated place, so city zoning rules apply to most lots.
- Where the lake began. The Catawba Power Company built the first Catawba Dam and power plant near India Hook in 1904, creating the reservoir that later became Lake Wylie.
- Rapid growth. India Hook's population went from 1,614 in 2000 to 2,051 in 2010 and 3,817 in 2020, on 2.64 square miles of land and 0.90 square miles of water.
- Heritage tree threshold. For lots inside Rock Hill, the zoning ordinance treats canopy trees over 32 inches DBH and understory trees over 10 inches as Heritage Trees, which may not be removed or damaged without city approval.

India Hook Questions
How do I know whether my India Hook lot is in Rock Hill city limits?
Your property tax bill or the York County GIS parcel viewer will show whether the parcel is inside the city. If it is, city zoning rules, including the Heritage Tree threshold, apply.
Should I grind the stump of a tree on my lake bank?
Often not. On a slope, the stump and roots keep holding soil after the tree is gone. Cutting it flush and leaving it in place is usually kinder to the bank than grinding a hole in it.
Can you remove a tree that fell into the lake?
Trees in the water or on the bank below the 569.4-foot full pond line are in Duke Energy's jurisdiction, so check with Duke first. We can handle the part of the tree that is still on your lot.
