Belmont Sits Between Two Rivers

Tree Removal in Belmont is shaped by water on both sides. The city sits on a peninsula formed where the Catawba River and its tributary, the South Fork Catawba River, become two arms of Lake Wylie. Belmont is about 12 miles west of Charlotte and roughly 10 miles east of Gastonia, across the lake from the Lake Wylie and Tega Cay side we work on in South Carolina. It had 15,010 residents at the 2020 census.

Mill-town lots

Belmont's history is written in its houses. Stowesville Mill, founded in 1853, was one of the first three cotton mills in Gaston County, and Chronicle Mills, organized in 1901, was the first of nearly twenty mills built in Belmont through 1930. Mill villages meant rows of modest houses on modest lots. A century later, the trees around those houses are big, and the lots are still small. In practice that means:

  • Little or no room to drop a tree whole.
  • Neighbors' roofs, fences and cars within reach of almost any tree.
  • Overhead service drops running through the canopy.
  • Narrow side yards that limit what equipment can get to the backyard.

Nearly every mill-village removal is a climb-and-lower job: the climber removes limbs and trunk sections piece by piece, and each piece is lowered on a rope to a ground crew.

Waterfront and slopes

On the lake sides of the peninsula, lots can drop steeply to the water. Shoreline trees are often undercut by waves and runoff. Removing them takes careful rigging so nothing ends up on a dock or in the lake, and stumps on a bank are usually best left in place to hold the soil. Work in the lake or on the shore below Lake Wylie's full pond elevation falls under Duke Energy's shoreline rules, so check with Duke first if your tree's base is near the water line.

The abbey and the old campus trees

In 1872 Father Jeremiah O'Connell bought a 500-acre tract and gave it to Benedictine monks; Belmont Abbey was founded in 1876 and still runs Belmont Abbey College. Between the abbey grounds, the old mill neighborhoods and the lake edges, Belmont has a lot of mature trees for a city its size, and many of them are close to buildings.

Owners and households

Census QuickFacts lists a 70.7% owner-occupied rate in Belmont, a median owner-occupied home value of $395,000 and 17.3% of residents aged 65 or older. Plenty of long-time residents live in older homes with big trees, and many are glad to hand off the cleanup as well as the cutting.

Belmont Questions

My mill-village lot has no room to drop the tree. Can it still come down?

Yes. Small lots are where sectional removal shines: the tree is climbed, cut in pieces and each piece lowered by rope. It takes more time than felling, and the estimate reflects that.

The tree is between my house and my neighbor's. Who pays?

Generally the owner of the land where the trunk stands is responsible for the tree. If the trunk is on the line, neighbors often split the cost. We can give both of you the same written estimate.

Can you take down a tree on my lake bank?

Usually, with careful rigging so nothing lands on the dock or in the water. If the base is at or below the full pond line, check with Duke Energy before work starts.

Do you also work across the lake in South Carolina?

Yes. Belmont faces the Lake Wylie and Tega Cay side of the water, and we work on both sides. If you have property in both states, we can schedule the estimates together.
